FAQs

Why is it called New York?

There used to be a cottage at the top of our land here at Penstacan called New York and another in the village called Pennsylvania. There was a saying that Cilycwm is 'only as big as New York to Pennsylvania'. A local historian friend told us the story and encouraged us to preserve the history and keep the name, so we did.

Is there wild swimming and hiking nearby?

Yes, it's a great location for both. You can dip in our mountain stream on-site, and there are numerous wild swimming spots nearby. We are between the Cambrian Mountains and the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park - both are off the beaten track and you can get right out into the wilds.

Is the barn suitable for a romantic getaway or mini-moon?

Absolutely. New York was designed with couples in mind. The mezzanine bedroom, slipper bath, log burner, and private veranda create an intimate and romantic atmosphere. It's perfect for celebrating special occasions or simply escaping together.

Is the barn a good place for a solo or creative retreat?

It's a great and safe place for a solo retreat and is very private and peaceful. It's a perfect space to inspire you to write your next best seller. There are writing spaces upstairs and down - big armchairs to curl up in or a rustic table under the beams.

Can I bring my bike?

Yes - we are well placed for mountain biking and road cycling. We can offer secure bike storage or you can keep it dry and undercover in the veranda.

Is there a good local pub and places to eat?

Enjoy our foodie guide - there's a good choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants in Llandovery and the surrounding area, with some special spots further afield for perfect holiday days out combining good food and inspiring views.

What makes New York different from other barn conversions?

New York is the oldest building in our courtyard - in 2026 it will be 200 years old. It's got loads of character with A-frame beams and eclectic architectural features including reclaimed stained glass. It's been designed as a boutique space specifically for two, with attention to detail throughout - from the handmade kitchen with local beech worktops to the signature wine shelf by the slipper bath.
